A shopping spree in downtown Oudsthoorn - that's what Sue got this morning!
To put it into perspective, downtown Oudtshoorn probably equates to a shopping experience at Letchworth or Syston.....oh well. Actually the shops may not be that limited, but B's tolerance only ran to one shop on this occasion.
Oudsthoorn also has a worthwhile museum - we visited it - mainly about the ostrich feather industry and the people associated with it - it has recreations of a chemist and a bank from the time (late 1800s?) and a lot of various memorabilia. Interestingly it houses what must be the only operating synagogue inside a museum. There was some interesting information about how various peoples migrated to the area - often having been pushed from their original homes in Europe for various reasons.
We are now in Warmwaterberg - at a spa! Don't get jealous - it all sounds luxurious, but this isn't what it all seems. Basically it's an overpriced campsite with substandard (by SA standards anyway) facilities with two small outdoor swimming pools filled with hot spring water (slightly radioactive). We spent some time there as the sun disappeared this evening, soaking up the lovely warmth after quite a cold day on the road. It was really very nice but it doesn't really compensate for the price/quality of the rest of the campsite, which is a bit rustic compared to other places we have stayed - this is the first disappointment we've had so far, but it's been an interesting experience (and not THAT bad, just too expensive for what you get).
Tomorrow we're off to De Hoop Nature Reserve hoping to spot whales if we can get a place on the campsite.
