Sue opened the door in the morning to be almost hit by a bird swooping past - lesser striped swallows were enjoying the morning insects around the campsite. Off to Nairobi today, there were waterbuck and impala next to the road to the park gates, then the bumpy 25km back to the tar near Loitoktok, passing various Masai villages, seeing a group of 5 giraffe, a couple of small mongoose and a line of colourfully dressed women attending some event. The road from Loitoktok to Emali is reputed to be the best in Kenya - and it probably deserves it - it's fairly straight, smooth and empty, so a very easy drive, however the same cannot be said for the next stretch - the Nairobi-Mombassa road which is full of very slow trucks, suicidal minibuses and coaches and occasional cars. As we are left hand drive Sue has to call out oncoming traffic as we try to pass the trucks, some of which slow down to around 5kph for uphill stretches! Lots of insane overtaking going on - several oncoming bus drivers were clearly visible as they dodged back to their side of the road right in front of us - we survived though.
We went straight to Wildebeest to find that the staff there remembered us too and that Alan has been continuing to make improvements. It rained heavily this evening, so we spent some time in the guest lounge looking at photos and talking to Alan about their plans. The pond is now full of frogs - very noisy frogs - it can sometimes be difficult to hold a conversation above their peeps and chirps! Getting back to the truck we found that the main rooflight has sprung a leak - a continual drip-drip-drip, so a bucket was carefully placed and off to sleep.
